Unused chemicals, rechargeable batteries, and fluorescent lightbulbs cannot go into the regular garbage or recycling because they are hazardous.
Safely get rid of hazardous materials and more at a free drop-off event in Jefferson on Aug. 16.
This safe, smart disposal event is made possible through a partnership between City of Jefferson and Metro Waste Authority, a regional collection site for hazardous material under the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
During the event, residents can drop-off hazardous items free of charge. The collected items are taken back to Metro Waste Authority’s facility in Bondurant, where they are processed and safely disposed.
This free hazardous waste drop-off event will be hosted on the north side of the city square Saturday, Aug. 16, from 9 to 11 am.
Accepted items include aerosol cleaners and paint, ammonia-based cleaners, antifreeze, batteries, fertilizers, fluorescent and LED light bulbs, gasoline and kerosene, oil and lead-based paint, stains and varnishes, metal polishes and rust removers, thermometers and thermostats (mercury), pesticides, petroleum adhesives, used motor oil and oil filters, sharps or needles (must be contained).
Not accepted items include ammunition, asbestos, electronics, explosives, fire extinguishers, latex paint, medications, propane tanks and cylinders, and radioactive materials. For more information visit www.WhereItShouldGo.com/SatelliteLocations.
